Abstract

833,684. Compression-ignition engines. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956], No. 39050/57. Divided out of and Addition to 833,683. Class 7(3) In piston-head combustion chambers 12, 13, Figs. 1 and 3, according to the parent Specification, in each of which air is similarly whirled whilst receiving fuel in a similar manner, a deflector 26 formed by the intersection of the chambers apportions fuel from a single pintle nozzle 20 between the chambers which as shown only intersect below the piston surface, a groove 21 completing their inter-connection. Air already given a rotary motion by the disposition of a valved overhead inlet duct is directed tangentially into the chambers 12, 13 by inwardly deepening grooves 24. There is an overhead exhaust valve. Modifications. The chambers may be vertical non-intersecting cylinders, the deflector being a ridge across an interconnecting groove running somewhat tangentially of the chambers so that the deflected fuel is directed thereinto with a component in the direction of the swirl. Alternatively the chambers may be non-intersecting hemispheres 41, 42, Fig. 6, interconnected by smaller spherical recesses 43, 44, or if three chambers are provided, by a recess having a deflector ridge of pyramidal form. The chambers may differ slightly in diameter. The subject-matter of the Provisional Specification is that of the Provisional Specification of the parent Specification.
