Abstract

832,971. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Dec. 12, 1956 [Dec. 19, 1955], No. 36340/55. Class 39(1). A multi-cavity magnetron having an odd number of resonator cavities is coupled to an external load through a directional coupler so that waves rotating in one direction only are lightly coupled and waves rotating in the opposite direction are heavily damped. The travelling wave maintained in the lightly coupled direction may in the reverse direction to the electron stream which interacts with a backward space harmonic component of the wave. In Fig. 4, the directional coupler is a "rat race" bridge circuit with outlets 1, 2, 3, 4. Operation may be restricted to a desired mode by (1) connecting alternate segments S, Fig. 1, by means of a continuous strap 3 which makes two complete circuits round the cavities to provide a closed loop of two turns, (2) having a number of cavities which is an odd multiple of three greater than unity and connecting the segments in groups of three by means of circular straps, or (3) having a number of cavities which is an odd multiple of three greater than unity and making every third cavity larger than the others.
