Class 20(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a ball joint between the foot 1 of a hydraulic pit prop and a base member 4 a two-part ball 18 mounted in the foot 1 comprises ducts 24, 25 which open into concentric tubular members 20, 22 constituting an extension of the ball, the members 20, 22 being adapted to be pushed into a chamber 31 in the member 4 in order to establish the connection between the foot 1 and the member 4. As shown, the foot 1 extending through a rubber sleeve 7 rests in a spherical cup 5 in the member 4. and is connected by a bore 13 to a high pressure chamber 14 wherein the inner prop member, not shown, is raised or lowered. A pressure fluid storage chamber situated above the inner prop member is connected to the foot 1 by a pipe 3 which passes through the inner prop member. Annular discs 34, 35 are sealingly mounted in the chamber 31. In order to set the prop against a load, fluid under pressure is pumped through a pipe 46 and passes through the parts 44, 42, 23, 13 to the chamber 14 so as to wave the inner prop member against the load. The fluid is returned from the storage chamber to the pump by way of the parts 3, 15, 16, 24, 25, 26, 41, 45. A conical grooved-ring packing 28 fitted over the part 19 of the ball forms a seal against fluid pressure building up in the chamber 14. The effect of fluid pressure on the ball half 19 is balanced by fluid pressure acting on a sleeve 40 fitted over the member 20.
