831,239. High-tension switches. CANADIAN WESTINGHOUSE CO. Ltd. Aug. 23, 1957, No. 26711/57. Class 38 (5). In a gas blast circuitbreaker in which the gas also produces the opening movement of the movable contact, the arrangement is such that the contacts do not open until adequate pressure for arc - extinction is available and then remain open notwithstanding variations in pressure due to the arc. The parts shown are enclosed in a pressure-gas-chamber and comprise the hollow movable contact 2 blocked in the closed position by the fixed contact 1. When the passage 3 is vented to the atmosphere the contact 2 is moved if the gas pressure on the annular top 6 of the contact 2 is sufficient to overcome the spring 12. After a short contact movement an annular piston 8 on the contact 2 closes vents 15 so that the space between the contact 2 and a cylinder 9 is cut-off from the gas supply. Also vents 16, 17 come into line so that the space is open to the atmosphere and the gas pressure also acts on the piston 8 to increase the speed of contact travel. In the fully-open position the vents 16, 17 move out of register so that the pressure cylinder 9 is unaffected by pressure changes in the passage 3 due to the arc. Contacts 14 ensure a low resistance path from the cylinder 9 to the contact 6. Specification 736,090 is referred to.
