Abstract
830,693. Alternators; automatic voltage control systems. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd., J. Jan. 2, 1958 [Jan. 15, 1957], No. 1540/57. Classes 35 and 38 (4). In an automatic voltage control system for a self-excited alternator supplying a D.C. load over a main rectifier in which the field current is controlled by a saturable reactor, an auxiliary, unregulated field winding opposes the main field winding so that the excitation can be reduced to zero. The alternator 1 charges a battery 2 over a rectifier 3. The excitation of the main field 4 is controlled by a saturable reactor 6 as in Specification 804,711. The field 4 is assisted by a series field 4a carrying the D.C. load current, and opposed by the auxiliary field 4b. Field 4b is either energized from an auxiliary rectifier 16, or as shown in broken lines, from the main rectifier 3. In the latter case a relay 27 is provided to isolate the field 4b from the battery 2 when the alternator is stationary. It is explained that the field 4 has to have a high residual field to ensure build-up at starting and this prevents the alternator being used at high speeds (as a train lighting set) unless neutralized by the auxiliary field 4b.
