Abstract

897,762. Automatic control systems for charging batteries. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd., J. April 7, 1960 [May 5, 1959], No. 15383/59. Class 38 (4). A battery-charging system comprises an inductor alternator 1 having a main field winding 6 and a demagnetizing field winding 7 the alternator charging a battery 2 over a main rectifier 4, the alternator output being controlled by means of a regulator, as shown, a carbon pile regulator having a voltage responsive control winding 11, fed from the alternator output over an auxiliary rectifier 8, and a current responsive control winding 13 responsive to the battery charging current, the windings 11, 13 being arranged to control the energization of the alternator field winding 6 to maintain the alternator output voltage substantially constant. The alternator may also supply an auxiliary load such as lighting. In a further embodiment the regulator is in the form of a saturable reactor in which embodiment frequency compensation is included.
