Abstract

803,527. Automatic voltage control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 17, 1956 [Sept. 16, 1955], No. 26546/55. Class 38 (4). A voltage control system for a D.C. excited inductor alternator has an amplifier feeding a control field, the amplifier power supply being derived by tapping the alternator output winding. An alternator IA has a main field winding MF supplemented by a control field winding CF. The output winding OW supplies terminals T1, T2 via a capacitor C which balances the winding inductance. The output voltage is reduced by transformer TR and compared in circuit CC with a reference voltage from source CV. The difference or error voltage is applied to the control winding of magnetic amplifier MA, the power supply for which is obtained by tapping across a portion TP of the alternator winding OW and as this supply varies with the error signal a greater output is produced than would be obtained by the use of a constant voltage supply. The error signal is inverted in MA to vary the excitation in winding CF in a corrective sense. The excitation may be supplied by the controlled winding only, the winding MF being omitted.
