The invention relates to automatic speed and voltage control systems for motor-alternator sets with provision for running, e.g. three sets in parallel. Voltage control.-The alternator field 12 is energized from a twostage magnetic amplifier 25, 37, controlled by a non-linear voltage sensing reactor 24 fed through a transformer 20 from one phase of the alternator 11. Auxiliary supplies for the magnetic amplifiers are also taken from the alternator through a transformer 31. Other features: (i) a stabilizing filter 39, 40 is provided between the two stages of magnetic amplification; (ii) at starting, switch 48 is operated and the alternator field is momentarily " flashed from the D.C. motor supply just before it is connected to the control circuit. , Speed control.-The auxiliary field 15 of the motor is energized from a magnetic amplifier 71 controlled in accordance with the alternator frequency as detected by series tuned circuits 65, 66 and 68, 69 resonant above and below the selected frequency, Damping is provided by a transformer 83 in series with the motor armature 13 supplying a further control winding on the amplifier 71.
