830,645. Electrode materials and processing. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. July 21, 1958 [July 23, 1957], No. 23325/58. Class 39(1). A storage tube target comprising an insulating layer with a metal layer on one side and a fine mesh grid on the other is made by the following steps : (1) a matrix grid 3, Fig. 1, is applied against the insulating layer 2, e.g. aluminium oxide formed by oxidising an aluminium base plate, (2) a layer of a second different insulating material, e.g. silicon monoxide is projected on to the matrix grid, e.g. by evaporation under vacuum, (3) the matrix grid is removed to leave channels 5, Fig. 2, between islands of the second insulating material 4, (4) a coating 6, Fig. 3, of a metal, e.g. copper, which adheres strongly to the insulating layer 2 but is loosely adherent to the insulating material 4 is applied, e.g. by cathode sputtering and (5) the loosely adherent metal particles are removed, e.g. by rubbing, to leave a metallic grid structure 7, Fig. 4. Finally the grid structure may be thickened in an electrolytic bath with copper or another metal. The target may be curved or planar.
