Abstract

830,339. Oxygen-combustible gas burners; turret machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 11, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 11981/56. Classes 39(2) and 75(1) [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXVI] In an oxygen-combustible gas burner the effect of blow back is reduced or eliminated by introducing under pressure an inhibitor gas (i.e. a gas or mixture, such as air, which does not form a highly explosive mixture with oxygen) to the oxygen feed line to the burner to effect a scavenging of this latter feed line between the oxygen control supply valve and the burner with a flow of the inhibitor gas when the oxygen supply valve is closed. When the burner or burners is or are used for forming a seal between a conductor rod and a quartz wall, the seal region of the wall is heat softened and pressed into contact with the conductor, the flame extinguished by turning off the oxygen and gas and the inihibtor gas passing through the burner is directed on the seal to cool it. To carry out the steps in the formation of such a seal a "lapped" valve assembly 7 consisting of two relatively rotating discs 8, 9 is employed, the disc 8 being fixed and the disc 9 being rotatable as by a handle 16 about a stud 10 secured in the disc 8, a spring washer 11 holding the discs resiliently in contact. Bores 12, 13 extend through the disc 8 and connect up the oxygen and gas supply lnes 20, 21 through corresponding bores 14, 15 in the disc 9, when suitably positioned to conduits 5, 6 leading to a mixing chamber 4 from where the combustible mixture passes through pipes 3 to burners 1 having jets 2. The bore 13 registers with an arcuate groove 24, Fig. 2 (oxygen and gas valves open) in the undersurface of the disc 9 and terminating the bore 15. The disc 9 also has a bore 17 communicating at its inner end with an arcuate groove 25, Figs. 2 and 5, in the undersurface of the disc 9 and connecting at its outer end through a tube 18 to the oxygen line 5 at a point near to the disc. The groove 25 registers with a bore 19 in the disc 8 connected to a compressed air supply line 22. The arrangement is such that when the oxygen and gas supplies are cut off as in the position of the discs shown in Fig. 5, a slight flow of air passes from the groove 25 through the bores 19, 17 to the tube 5 through the pipe 18 and out through the burner jets 2 which may be directed on to the seal located therebetween. Clockwise rotation of the disc 9 first admits gas from the bore 13 through the arcuate groove 24 bores 13, 15 and pipe 6 to the mixing chamber 4 and then oxygen through the bores 12, 14 whilst there is still a flow of air, and further rotation cuts off the supply of compressed air through the bore 19 and groove 25 and bore 17 to the pipe 18 and only oxygen and gas reach the burners, which are lit by a pilot flame 23.
