828,971. Valves. VELAN, A. K. Oct. 8, 1957 [Sept. 23, 1957], No. 31446/57. Class 135. A bonnetless gate valve comprises a body having an internal chamber 20 with inlet and outlet passages 90, 92, a removable valve seat 94 for at least one of the passages and a tapered valve gate 70 mounted on a screwed rising valve stem 44, the gate being prevented from rotation by guide means comprising two upright members 75, attached to a removable cover 77, which engage grooves in the valve gate. For maintenance purposes the valve gate may be removed by removing the cover 77, moving the gate to the open position, rotating it through 90 degrees and lowering it between the valve seats through the cover opening, the width of the gate being less than the space between the seats, the valve seats may then be unscrewed. The valve stem may be repacked when the valve is in service, even in the open position since a conical face 80 of the valve gate seats in a corresponding recess in the packing bush 48. An inspection bolt 100 screwed into the bottom of the cover 77 enables the valve to be checked for fluid-tightness in the closed position.
