Abstract

247,589. Zimmermann, E. O. Feb. 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Piston valves; repairs, facilitating.-A stop valve of the piston type is constructed with a circumferential opening 3 midway of the length of the seating 1, 2 and communicating with the outlet 4, the piston being formed of a series of packing washers 14 tightened up between flanges 11, 13. When the valve is closed, as shown, the packing is entirely shielded by the lower part of the seating, and when open by the upper part. The axial length of the lower flange 13 is such that the washers pass within the upper part 1 of the seating before the discharge opening 3 is uncovered. The packing is tightened up by an internal nut 16 on a coaxial spindle 12 projecting upwards from the lower flange 13. In an alternative arrangement this adjustment is made by a key spindle passing through the bottom of the casing and adapted to be pushed up into engagement with the head of a bolt passing through the member 12<1> into screwed engagement with the main spindle 8. The standards 9 carrying the main actuating screw nut are bowed out at the top 21 to support the gland 23 by means of its flanged ends when raised to renew the packing 7.
