A method of making clockwork springs for miniature watches from a rolled strip of hardenable steel having a carbon content of at least 0.4% comprises heating the strip until it consists of at least 80% of austenite, cooling to the recrystallization temperature, the strip still consisting of 80% austenite, rapidly deforming the cooled strip to at least 80% reduction in a temperature range between the recrystallization temperature and 10‹ C. below the temperature at which the martensite formation begins but above 100‹ C., the deformed austenite being subsequently converted into bainite or martensite. During cooling the strip may be simultaneously deformed if desired. The rapid deformation prevents the austenite from changing into bainite or martensite during deformation of the strip.
