Abstract
828,139. Free-piston gas generators. FIAT, SOC. PER AZIONI. April 29, 1958 [May 3, 1957], No. 13611/58. Class 7(1) A variable scavenging pressure freepiston gas generator includes an outwardly arranged compressor for the air compression to take place on the expansion stroke in the engine cylinder and an underpressure cushion on the opposite side of the compressor piston and the ratio of the geometric stroke Cg and the engine stroke cm is such that the ratio # of the air available for combustion and the air necessary for combustion (stoichiometric air) is lower than 1.2 to 1 at the maximum admissible stroke of the piston Cg and any scavenging pressure and Cg is 1.8 at least. In the gas Cm generator shown in Fig. 1 a channel 10 is bored in each compressor cylinder and connects in the neighbourhood of the inner dead point of the compressor piston 11 the underpressure cushion 12 and the compression chamber 13. The conduit 16 interconnects the two underpressure cushions 12. Fig. 5 shows an opposed piston gas generator equipped with positive cushions in which the minimum pressure equals the suction pressure of the compressor. The conduit 19 balances the cushions 17. Pressure adjustment of the underpressure cushion can be obtained by limiting its maximum pressure by a pressure valve with or without an adjustable opening pressure.
