Abstract
827,961. Tubular heat exchangers. CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO. Ltd. Oct. 24, 1956 [Oct. 24, 1955], No. 30363/55. Class 64(3) A heat exchange tube 1 which may be the inner of a pair of concentric tubes is provided with a series of part annular plates 3 extending transversely to its axis and successively angularly displaced such that their non-circumferential edges define at least one helical passage about the tube 1, and the opposed surfaces of adjacent plates define a series of unobstructed partcircumferential passages about the tube 1. Flow through these latter passages may be assisted by the provision on the lead-. ing edge of each plate of a lip 4, and by a similar but oppositely formed lip (not shown) on its trailing edge. The pitch of the helical passage may be varied by changing the spacing between adjacent plates 3. In Fig. 6 for example the spacing between the plates of a group 11<SP>111</SP> is uniform but greater than uniform spaces provided between the plates of a group 11<SP>1</SP>, the two groups being separated by a group 11<SP>11</SP> in which the plate spacing progressively increases. Two helical passages may be provided by plates arranged in diametrically oppposed pairs. The plates may have peripheral flanges whereby adjacent plates are secured to each other and to the tube 1 (Fig. 4, not shown).
