The ends of end-plate ports of a pressure exchanger are tapered by decrease of the radial dimension of the port as shown in Fig. 2b or the radial dimension of the port may be reduced at the centre as shown in Fig. 4b. A port may be tapered at both ends. The amount of taper may be adjustable or interchangeable end plates having differently shaped ports may be provided.
