827,946. Carbonating beverages. BOWNASS, K. A. Feb. 4, 1958, No. 3646/58. Class 14 (1). Apparatus for carbonating beverages comprises a fluid-pressure tight tank 3, an atomizing injector 8 at or near the bottom of the tank for injecting carbon dioxide into the beverage therein, and means such as a pulsating pump and a spray nozzle 11 for introducing beverage into the tank in the form of periodically interupted jets or spurts which strike the surface of the beverage already in the tank. Non-return valves 16, 17 are fitted in the pipes 10, 7 supplying respectively the beverage and carbon dioxide and the tank is pivoted at 6 to a support 1 in such a manner that when nearly empty a spring 12 causes the tank to adopt a vertical position but when nearly full the tank swings about the pivot 6 to compress the spring 12 and operate a switch 15 which stops the pump supplying beverage through the pipe 10. The tank may be provided with cooling coils and a baffle-plate may be provided in the vicinity of the injector 8. In a modification the tank is not supported on a pivot but is fixed and the switch 15 is replaced by a pressure sensitive switch which senses the pressure in the tank above the upper level 19.
