826,742. Preventing and extinguishing fires. DARIC, G. Feb. 24, 1956, No. 5926/56. Class 47 [Also in Group XXIX] The fire hazard associated with a liquid hydrocarbon storage tank is reduced by pumping water from an annular space formed round the tank base by a wall 10 to a spray 15 by a pump 16, and hence cooling the tank walls when the vapour pressure inside the tank exceeds a predetermined value. The annular space may also contain a layer of spilt hydrocarbon and hence density-sensing means may be provided to prevent it being delivered to spray 15. The pump 16 can also be used to deliver water to a foam-generating unit for fire-extinguishing, by closing valve 24 and opening valve 25, either manually or automatically in response to temperaturesensing means.
