Abstract
470,193. Fire-extinguishing. PYRENE CO., Ltd., and BEDFORD, H. E. March 4, 1936, No. 6603. [Class 47 (ii)] In making foam for extinguishing fires in oil tanks which normally have a layer of water below the oil, the water is used as one ingredient of the foam. As shown, foam-generating powder is forced, by compressed gas, from a container 13 into the layer of water 2. For this purpose, a pipe 9 secured in the wall of the tank and provided with a check valve 10 and control valve 11, is adapted for ready connection to the container 13. In a modification, a foam nozzle of the injector type is built into the tank at the level of the water layer, and is connected to a source of compressed gas and foaming agent ; or foaming agent may be added to the water layer, and compressed gas forced in through a distributing device. In another modification, water is withdrawn from the layer by a pump and passed through a foam generator, the resultant foam being discharged on to the surface of the oil.
