Abstract

826,480. Pipe couplings. MESSENGER & SONS (BIRMINGHAM) Ltd. May 1, 1957 [May 1, 1956], No. 13320/56. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a gas tap 10 comprising a body 12 in which is rotatably mounted a valve 16 for controlling the flow of gas from the inlet 14 to the outlet 15 of the tap, the outlet having a bayonettype engagement with a detachable adaptor 11, there is mounted on the body a spring member 39 having a projecting part 41 which is urged into the path of movement of a locking member or portion on the valve to prevent turning thereof. The spring member is cooperative with the adaptor in such a manner that, when the adaptor is engaged with the outlet, the adaptor cooperates with the spring member to withdraw the projecting part of the spring member from the path of movement of the locking member or protion on the valve to permit rotation of the valve. As shown, the body 12 incorporates a rotary, tapered, plug valve 16 provided with lugs 19 between which is pivoted a plate 22 the oppositely disposed keys 23 of which are adapted to drop into slots 24 cut in a rim 25 of the body when the valve is in a closed position, a washer 27 formed with an arm is secured to the valve, that arm being adapted to cooperate with stops to limit angular movement of the valve to 90 degrees. The outlet 15 has an internal, conical seating 38 to receive the part-spherical head 37 of a pipe 31 provided with a shoulder 33 between which and a lip 34 on the adaptor is compressed a spring 32. The adaptor 11 includes pegs 29 which are passed into axial slots 46, 47 in the body, rotation of the adaptor causing one of the pegs to move into the axial extension 48 of a groove 43, and the other peg to engage a U- shaped portion 49 of the spring 39. The latter has oppositely disposed parts 40, 41, the part 40 being anchored in a hole 44, and the part 41 extending between the lugs 19 and being withdrawn by the action of the peg on the portion 49 of the spring to allow the valve to be rotated. When the adaptor 11 is uncoupled, the part 41 returns to a position between the lugs 19, and one of the keys 23 drops into a slot 24 to prevent opening of the valve. When the adaptor is coupled to the tap and the valve is open, the arm of the washer 27 lies in the path of the end 50 of the adaptor and prevents movement inwardly of the latter to the uncoupling position.
