Abstract
<PICT:0826387/III/1> <PICT:0826387/III/2> <PICT:0826387/III/3> Alkali-metal carbonates and carbon dioxide are produced by thermally decomposing the alkali-metal bicarbonate at a temperature above the melting-point of the corresponding carbonate by generating heat within the mass of bicarbonate or within the reactor containing the bicarbonate. The process is especially applicable to the production of sodium carbonate from sodium bicarbonate, which may be the crude sodium bicarbonate produced in the ammonia-soda process. The molten carbonate may be cast, allowed to solidify, and ground, or a finely-divided solid may be obtained by atomizing the melt using air or steam, which may be superheated. The heating may be performed electrically, especially by induction or dielectric heating. Fig. 2 shows a reactor 10 of suitable refractory material surrounded by an induction heating coil 12. Fig. 4 shows a cross-section through another reactor 58 about which are disposed two electrodes 60 and 62 for dielectric heating. Fig. 5 shows a reactor consisting of an inner lining 70, a body 72, an induction heating coil 76 and a spout for pouring 82. Specification 826,388 is referred to.
