Abstract

<PICT:0699215/III/1> The hygroscopicity of potash material containing potassium chloride is decreased by fusing the material, forming a film of the fused material of a thickness greater than one-sixteenth of an inch and less than one-eighth of an inch, and then cooling said film from a temperature of 5 DEG C above its melting point to a temperature of 500 DEG C in not more than 40 secs. As shown in Fig. 1, the material in the molten state is discharged from a furnace 10 into a trough 16 and from there on to the upper surface 18 of a rotating disc 17. The disc, shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 2, is cooled internally by water which is introduced from a conduit 32 and is discharged through an outlet pipe 33. A scraper 39 removes the solidified material from the disc, preferably in flakes 1/8 in. thick. The flakes are ground and sieved, fines being returned to the process.
