Abstract
825,666. Electrostatic precipitation. MESSEN-JASCHIN, G. Jan. 25, 1957 [Jan. 27, 1956], No. 2828/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XX] An apparatus for charging particles suspended in air consists of a radioactive source 6 carried on an electrode 5, a downstream counter electrode 9, and a ring electrode 10 surrounding the ray cone a for attracting particles which would otherwise deposit on the radioactive source. The source may be an α-or #-ray emitter, e.g. a radium foil of circular or square shape. If the source is in the form of a strip, the ring 10 may be oval or elongated. The disadvantage of using a grid instead of a ring is referred to. The apparatus is used in an electrostatic precipitator including nested cylindrical collecting electrodes 3, 4 and a further perforated counter-electrode 8. The source 6 is within an insulating enclosure 7. Several sources with associated ring electrodes may be disposed side by side.
