Abstract

1,167,053. Discharge apparatus. C. CRISTOFV, and G. N. CRISTOFV. 28 March, 1967, No. 13982/67. Heading H1X. Apparatus for producing a flow of negatively charged particles within a chamber which acts to shield the interior thereof from the Earth's electrostatic field comprises means A for generating an electrostatic field between a positive electrode 29, and a negative electrode 35 respectively positioned at the places between which the flow of negatively charged particles is to take place, and means 33 for stationing a radioactive material by the negative electrode 35 so that negatively charged particles generated by the radioactive material are caused to flow to the positive electrode 29 under the influence of said electrostatic field. The positive electrode 29 may be mounted on the ceiling of a room or on the roof of a vehicle and the negative electrode 35 on the floor. The electrostatic field and flow of negative ions have a beneficial effect on human beings in the chamber who may otherwise suffer due to the Faraday cage shielding effect of the chamber. The radioactive material, which may be radium sulphide or tritium, is contained in a metal cup 34a mounted in an aperture 34 in a metal housing 33. Air from an electric fan 36 is ionized by the radioactive material and blown through the negatively charged grid 35. The A.C. rectifying circuit A supplying the electrodes may be combined with or replaced by a D.C. transistor circuit (Fig. 3, not shown).
