Abstract
1,029,621. Air-conditioning units. K. E. MERCKLE. Jan. 24, 1963, No. 37616/63. Heading F4V. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] An air conditioner comprises a portable casing 14 within which is mounted a cathode element 18 in the form of a cylindrical filter structure constituted by metal filings or threads and connected by a lead 17 to the negative pole of a rectifier 16 fed from a transformer 15. Air to be purified is sucked by a fan 19 and passes through slots 26 in the front of the casing and through a metal filter element 21 which may be connected to the positive pole of the rectifier 16 to serve as an anode filter. The air is directed by a conical deflector 22 through the cathode filter element 18 where the foreign bodies still present in the air are deposited on the element while the purified air becomes sterilized by anions radiated from the cathode element and escapes to atmosphere through a grating 23. Sterilization of the air may be further increased by the addition of ozone which may be produced either separately and fed into the air flow or by setting up an electrostatic field between the fitter elements 18 and 21, the ozone being produced by the passage of the air through the field. Further sterilization may be obtained by locating an ultraviolet light generator and/or radio-active elements outside the casing 14 or inside the casing between or outside the filter elements 18 and 21. The latter may be adapted to serve as a protection against radiation.
