Abstract

842,147. Electrostatic precipitation. SOC. FINANCIERE D'EXPANSION COMMERCIALE ET INDUSTRIELLE S. A. SFINDEX. Oct. 8, 1956, No. 30664/56. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XX] An electrostatic precipitator has an ionizer chamber in which is located a radioactive emitter 19, Fig. 3, radiating downstream and a surrounding tubular electrode 21, and the gas is fed through the apparatus under pressure. The collecting electrode system 16 is disposed in the annular space between the insulating tube 17 and the pressure housing 6. Where the gas contains moisture the insulating tube 17 may consist of water-repellent material such as silicon glass. A further electrode 22 is provided downstream of the radioactive emitter and the voltages between the emitter and the electrodes 21 and 22 are adjusted so that the whole crosssection of the tube 17 contains ions even though the radius of the tube may be greater than the range of the radioactive emitter. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, a number of radioactive emitters 23 are disposed within hexagonal tubes 24 which together form a honeycomb structure. A further electrode may be constituted by the front of the collecting system 9. Power is supplied to the collecting system by spring contacts 32 and to the ionizer electrodes over a voltage divider 29. The gas may be cooled and then expanded before entering the apparatus to facilitate condensation of moisture on the dust particles.
