The thermal efficiency of the forced-flow, once-through boiler described in the parent Specification is improved by preheating the water injected between the superheating stages 3, 4 for the control of steam temperature in a series of high pressure, bled steam, main feedwater heaters 7, 8, 9. In modifications the water to be injected is preheated in a separate heater connected to an upper bleeding stage of the turbine or in a series of separate heaters connected in parallel with the main heaters.
