Class 64(1) A feedwater heating system for a steam turbine having a high pressure stage 3 and a low pressure stage 5 fed from a boiler 1 comprises a condenser 7 and a series of feedwater heaters S 0 S 1 S 2 S 3 S 4 and S 5 in which steam extracted from the turbine at points To T 1 T 2 T 3 T 4 and T 5 condenses to heat feedwater from the condenser passing through coils in the heaters and is characterized in that the steam bled from the higher pressure stages of the turbine is cooled in desuperheaters D. D 1 D 2 D 3 by passing a reduced portion of the feedwater therethough before the steam is fed to the feedwater heaters. Flow control members R 1 R 2 and R 3 in the main feedwater line by-pass some of the feedwater through desuperheaters D 1 D 2 and D 3 , the heated feedwater being fed back into the main flow at points L 13 and L 12 where the temperatures of the main and by-pass flows are substantially the same. The main flow of feedwater passes through desuperheater D 0 and the condensate from the feedwater heaters passes back to the condenser. In a modification desuperheaters D 1 D 2 and D 3 are fed with the condensate from their respective feedwater heaters S 1 S 2 and S 3 desuperheater D 0 being fed with the main flow together with the condensate from heater S 0 . In a further modification the condensate from heaters S 0 and S 1 is fed into the condensate from heater S 2 which is then used to feed the desuperheaters D 0 , D 1 and D 2 via flow control members and similarly the condensates from heaters S 3 S 4 and S 5 are combined to supply desuperheater D 3 via a flow control member.
