Abstract

1,044,832. Feedwater heating systems. RICHARDSONS, WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 6, 1961], No. 36037/61. Heading F4A. In a feedwater heating system in which exhaust steam from a turbine 10 is condensed in a condenser 12 and subsequently used as feedwater for a steam generator, steam at a higher pressure and temperature is bled from the turbine through a line 16 and part of this bled steam is led to an ejector 18 in which it is used to recompress a portion of the exhaust steam from the turbine. The resulting combined stream of steam at an intermediate pressure flows through a heat exchanger 20 to the condenser 12 heating the feedwater in so doing. The feedwater from the heat exchanger 20 is pumped to a further feedwater heater 22 in which steam bled from the turbine through line 16 effects further heating before flowing to the heat exchanger 20. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) a number of ejectors are used to compress the low-pressure steam to varying pressure levels, each of the ejectors being associated with a separate feed-water heater arranged in series with the other heaters with respect to the flow of feedwater. In an alternative arrangement the bled steam is used to compress the low pressure steam by means of a turbine-driven compressor instead of an ejector. The invention may be combined with the condensing system described in Specification 1,044,831.
