Abstract
The invention comprises sulphonamides of the general formula <FORM:0824978/IV (b)/1> wherein X is a halogen atom and R is an alkyl group preferably containing 3-6 carbon atoms, and their preparation by treating a 2-alkyl-5-amino - 1:3:4 - thiadiazole with a reactive derivative of a p-halogenobenzenesulphonic acid such as a halide or ester. Suitably a phalogenobenzene sulphonyl halide such as the chloride is used in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as pyridine. In an example, the preparation of 2-n-butyl-5-p-chlorobenzenesulphonamido-thiadiazole and the corresponding 2-n-propyl-, isopropyl-, sec.-butyl-, tert.butyl- and n-hexyl-derivatives is described. Specification 811,522 is referred to.ALSO:Sulphonamides of the formula <FORM:0824978/VI/1> where X is a halogen atom and R is an alkyl group (see Group IV (b)) are stated to have a hypoglycaemic action. For test purposes the drugs, for example 5-p-chlorobenzenesulphonamido - 2 - n - butyl - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiadiazole and its 2-tert-butyl and 2-n-hexyl analogues are administered orally to rabbits in suspension in gum acacia. Specification 811,522 is referred to.
