Abstract
The invention comprises 2,5-bis-ethyleneimino- 3,6-dihydroxyp-benzoquinones in which the ethyleneimino groups are unsubstituted or C-lower-alkylated (the term "lower" indicating the presence of 1-4 carbon atoms), and metal (especially alkali and alkaline-earth metal) salts thereof. They may be prepared by treating the corresponding 3, 6-bis-acetylamino or -propionylamino compounds with an alkali metal hydroxide in aqueous solution and, if desired, liberating the hydroxyquinone from the resulting alkali metal salts. The products are active against amoebae and bacteria. Specification 796,218 is referred to.ALSO:2,5-Bis-ethyleneimino-3,6-dihydroxy-p-benzoquinones, in which the ethyleneimino groups are unsubstituted or C-lower-alkylated (the term "lower" indicating the presence of 1-4 carbon atoms), may be used for the treatment of amoebic and bacterial infections by enteral, parenteral or local administration, e.g. in the form of tablets, dragees, powders, salves, creams, suppositories, solutions, emulsions or suspensions, which may be sterilized and/or contain auxiliary substances (e.g. preserving, stabilizing, wetting or emulsifying agents) or other therapeutically valuable substances.
