Abstract

The invention comprises the 21-hemi-succinate of allopregnane-17a ,21-diol-3,11,20-trione and its water-soluble salts containing as the cation Na, K or NR4, wherein R represents hydrogen, or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, aryl or an aralkyl group, each containing up to ten carbon atoms. In an example, allopregnane - 17a ,21 - diol - 3,11,20-trione in pyridine is treated with succinic anhydride, the mixture diluted and acidified with HCl when the 21-hemi-succinate precipitates; subsequent solution in aqueous sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide yields the sodium salt, which may be isolated by lyophilisation.ALSO:Anti-fibrillatory agents suitable for treatment of auricular and ventricular paroxysmal tachycardia comprise sterile aqueous solutions of salts of the 21 - hemi - succinate of allopregnane-17a ,21 - diol - 3,11,20 - trione, in which the cation may be Na, K, or NR4, R being hydrogen, or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, aryl or an aralkyl group. A solution suitable for injection contains the hemisuccinate and sodium bicarbonate in physiological serum.
