Abstract
823,741. Apparatus for heating air and water. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 9. 1957 [Feb 22. 1957; April 24, 1957], Nos. 6014/57 and 13040/57. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A heating appliance adapted for use in a domestic fireplace comprises an oil burner 23, the combustion gases from which pass through one path in order to heat air and through a second path defined wholly or in part by the-existing fireplace structure, in order to heat water. The combustion gases may heat the air and water simultaneously, the available heating gases being apportioned between the two paths by means such as a damper 25. The air heating path comprises an externally finned flue 33 around which air circulates by convection before passing into the room through openings 39 in an external casing 1, the air to be heated entering the casing at or below the floor level. The water heating path may comprise the existing back-boiler flue (Fig. 1, not shown), or the burner gases may flow over a coil 49 (Fig. 4) connected to the existing back-boiler 47, the existing flue around the boiler being blocked by means such as indicated at 48. Alternatively the gases may flow through a duct 26 passing through the boiler as shown in Fig. 2. In a further form described the gases flow over a tube coil connected to hot water storage tanks or radiators (Fig. 5, not shown). The damper 25 may be actuated by means responsive to the temperature of the room being heated, and the oil flow to the burner may be governed by the water temperature.
