Abstract

896,357. Water-tube steam and hot-water boilers. HIBBERT, H. Feb. 4, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13092/59. Classes 64(1) and 123(2) Water from an inlet 18 flows up through a coiled tube 16 which has its lower coils contacting one another to form a solid fuel combustion chamber but its upper coils spaced for the combustion gases to flow between them to a flue 20. The water outlet, to a reservoir, is not shown. There may be two or more coiled tubes, each feeding its own hot reservoir, forming a series of coaxial coils or wound in an interdigitated fashion to form a composite coil, every second or more convolution forming part of a continuous coiled tube. Thus steam may be passed to a radiator circuit and hot water to a domestic supply cistern. The coil 16 may be of uniform diameter, as shown, with the upper part I of the cylindrical metal casing of larger diameter than that of the lower part 2, or, alternatively, the casing may be uniform and the coil formed in two parts of different diameter. Asbestos wool 3 and a cylindrical metal shell 4 surround the casing. An asbestos lining 17 of the lower part 2 of the casing contacts the coil 16. A fuel hopper 13 with a lid 14 may be vertically adjustable to determine the depth of fire-bed. The coil 16 rests on a divided fire brick 19 and there is a circular grate 5 above an ash box 7. Openings 8 to these have gravity-closed doors 10 one of which may have an adjustable air intake controlled thermostatically. There may be a thermostatically-controlled restrictor in the flue 20.
