822,482. Impregnating for electric insulation. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd. Oct. 12, 1956 [July 14, 1955], No. 20452/55. Class 140. In a method of making an impregnated paper insulated power cable comprising the steps of preparing an impregnating composition by mixing an organic polymer such as polyisobutylene with a mineral oil to thicken the oil, drying and degassing the impregnating composition, and impregnating the paper with it, the impregnating composition is, during one of these steps, subjected to ultrasonic vibrations to bring about a temporary reduction in its viscosity. The composition may be subjected intermittently, e.g. for periods of one or two seconds, to vibrations in the frequency range of 16-250 kc/s. As shown, a paper insulated cable coiled on a drum 2 is placed in an impregnating tank 3 provided with a hollow, liquidtight core 5, open at its lower end, which acts as a mounting for magneto-strictive ultrasonic generators 6, connected by a cable 7 to a power supply 8. The pipe line for circulating the impregnating composition from a storage tank 9 to the impregnating tank 3 includes a chamber 10 in which are mounted bowl-shaped piezoelectric ultrasonic generators 11 which produce a focused beam of energy. The pipes and tank are heated and/or lagged to maintain the composition in a heated condition. In an alternative form of impregnating tank, ultrasonic generators are mounted in the outer cylindrical wall of the tank in addition to those mounted in the core. The process enables higher viscosity compositions, or higher density paper, to be used. Specification 581,830 is referred to.
