Abstract
Articles are insulated electrically, thermally, or against damp by a coating of cellulose which has been esterified, preferably not beyond the diacyl stage, by a process which does not cause destruction of the cellulose fibres and by acylating agents whose acid radical contains at least three carbon atoms. The cellulosic material may be in the form of threads, fabrics, or loose fibres of cotton or regenerated cellulose, and may be esterified by the processes described in Specifications 349,322, 353,978, 379,658, and 380,822, with or without preliminary swelling. In examples, cotton threads, cotton bands, viscose bands, and artificial threads of regenerated cellulose are butyrylated with retention of their structure until the acyl content is approximately 1,5 acyl-groups per C6H10O5 unit and are employed for insulating electric conductors, lagging steam pipes and as damp-proofing materials for winding on underground pipes or cables.
