A handle is attached to a vacuum cleaner or other appliance by means of a clamp provided with a sleeve portion 17 adapted to embrace a lug on the appliance, the sleeve being provided with an adjustable pressure piece 22 which co-operates with the inner wall parts of the sleeve. The clamp has a socket 18. iri which the handle is fixed. The pressure piece 22 is slidable transversely of the sleeve 17 by means of a screw 20 accommodated in a nut 21. The pressure piece is loosely anchored to the sleeve 17 by a pin 25 and has lateral extensions 26 which are guided with slight clearance against the inner surface of the side walls of the sleeve 17.
