821,741. Porous slag. ENERGIE-VERSORGUNG SCHWABEN A. G. May 8, 1957 [May 19, 1956; March 9, 1957], No. 14698/57. Class 22. Porous slag is manufactured from acid vessel slag by cooling the liquid slag in a series of stages, comprising first reducing the temperature of a liquid slag stream to a level at which dissolved gases are freed, the viscosity in this first period being in the range of from 2.10<SP>4</SP> to 8.10<SP>4</SP> poise up to 2.10<SP>7</SP> to 10<SP>8</SP> poise, reducing the temperature at an accelerated rate in a second period until a viscosity of 109 poise is reached, slowly reducing the temperature in a third period over a viscosity range of 109 to 1013 poise, and finally reducing the temperature in a fourth period to obtain a glass-like porous product of viscosity above 10<SP>13</SP> poise. For a specified slag composition, temperatures of 900‹C., 700‹C., 560‹C., and 490‹C., correspond with the viscosity values of 2.10<SP>4</SP> to 8.10<SP>4</SP>, 2.10<SP>7</SP> to 10<SP>8</SP>, 109 and 1013 poise respectively. In Fig. 1, a stream 2 of acid vessel slag flows down a shaft 1 towards an endless conveyer 5 running over rollers 3, 4 in an airtight channel 6. Material acting as nuclei for gas bubbles e.g. wood-flour, brick- or tiledust, and also a combustible material e.g. coal powder or oil mixed with coal, shale, clay, rock or gangue, can be introduced into the stream 2 by devices, not shown, at a slag temperature 1300‹C., the slag cooling to 900‹C. upon reaching the conveyer. Water and/or air from nozzles 7 and 8 cool the slag on the conveyer 5 from 900‹C. to 700‹C., a shaft 11 serving to remove freed gases. The slag, now viscous, is cooled from 700‹C. to 560‹C. around the roller 4 by water or pressurized air, and jumps off automatically from the conveyer or is remove by a stripper 12. The slag is cooled from 560‹C. to 490‹C. in a shaft 16, the lower end of which dips below the level of water in a basin 17, the completely cooled slag being removed by a conveyer 18. Shaft 19 and basin 20 constitute a safety device whereby slag may fall directly from stream 2 to be quenched by water in the basin 20.
