Abstract
Liquid blast-furnace slag is desulphurized, e.g. before being blown into slag wool, by treating the surface of the slag in an open hearth furnace with flames containing free oxygen to oxidize the sulphur in the slag to SO2, and intermittently withdrawing the surface layer from which the sulphur has been removed. The bath of slag has flames played on the large surface presented to the atmosphere, and the desulphurized surface layer is withdrawn intermittently or continuously, e.g. by inclining the hearth or through adjustable outlets, while the surface layer is continually replaced by stirring, shaking or vibration. The slag may be further treated with flames containing free oxygen, while flowing along a trough with continued renewal of the surface layer by stirring, mechanical shaking, or ultrasonic vibration.ALSO:Liquid blast-furnace slag is desulphurized, e.g. before being blown into slag wool, by treating the surface of the slag in an open hearth furnace with flames containing free oxygen to oxidise the sulphur in the slag to SO2, and intermittently withdrawing the surface layer from which the sulphur has been removed.
