A valve for regulating the flow of liquid heat transfer medium e.g. to a heat exchanger for heating and cooling, has a valve closure member 7 axially displaceable by a thermal element 35, 41 located outside the valve casing, and a valve seat body 2, 3 carrying opposed seats 10, 11 for the valve member and displaceable along the same axis by a thermal element 22 located in an uncontrolled by-pass 19, 21 for the heat transfer medium. When the element 22 is acted upon by a high-temperature heat transfer medium it expands and lifts the valve body against a stop 6 and spring 32 so that' the medium passes to the outlet 18 via casing channel 16, body passage 29 and seat 10. With increase or decrease in room temperature, the elements 35, 41 respectively closes or opens the valve 7 with respect to seat 10. When a cooling heat transfer medium is used the element 22 contracts and the body is lowered to abut a stop 5 so that the cooling medium passes to the outlet via casing passage 17, body passage 31 and seat 11. On room temperature increasing or decreasing, the element 35, 41 opens or closes the valve 7. with respect to the seat 11. The valve 7 may be adjusted or manually actuated by, a screw 45 moving a plunger 38 into the liquid of the thermal element 35, 41. In two other, embodiments the space 36 is thermally insulated from the rest of the valve casing to prevent the temperature of the heat transfer medium from affecting the thermal element 35, 41.
