In a brake mechanism for road vehicles operation the brake pedal causes a power medium to apply power-operated brakes, the power medium preventing operation by the pedal of separate emergency foot-operated mechanical brake mechanism and brakes, but failure of the power medium and the power-operated brakes releases the emergency mechanism so that it can be operated by the brake pedal. The power medium, viz air, maintains a piston k in the shown position so that depression of the pedal i rotates a lever b about a fixed pivot c to operate a valve in casing a to supply compressed air to the power brakes, the piston k preventing actuation of emergency brakes through linkage e, f. Should the air pressure fail or fall below a predetermined value then piston k can move freely in cylinder j and on full depression of the air valve the lever d will rotate about its connection with lever b to apply the emergency brakes, Specification 791,257 is referred to.
