Abstract

A fluid pressure operated braking apparatus of the kind in which a fluid pressure actuator 4 of the diaphragm type is mounted on the back plate of a brake assembly for direct actuation of a wedge shoe separating means is characterized by the provision of a second fluid pressure actuated member having a thrust - transmitting connection with the actuator diaphragm, supply of pressure fluid to one side of this member being controlled by the hand brake mechanism whilst the service pressure acting on the actuator diaphragm also acts on the forward side of the member. In the embodiment shown the actuated member comprises a piston 11 held in a rearward, disengaged position by service pressure applied at port 6a and moved forward to actuate the diaphragm 4 and the operating rod 8 by compressed air entering at 12 when the power hand brake is actuated. If power supply fails the brake is operated manually through a pushrod 13 included in the hand brake linkage. The piston 11 has seals 19 one each side of the vent 20. Failure of either seal will thus vent the associated reservoir and a warning signal (not described) given, the other power system remaining operative. A second diaphragm may be substituted for the cylinder and piston. The diaphragms may be of the rolling type.
