Abstract

932,716. Emergency braking systems. J. T. MEYERS, J. L. MILLER, and S. G.GUMMER. April 28, 1960, No. 15003/60. Class 103 (1). A vehicle braking system has a service brake actuated by a cam-shaft 14 which is connected to an emergency brake system comprising a rod 26 of a piston 24 in a cylinder 25 mounted on a pivot 32, the piston being urged by a spring 30 in the brake applying direction and in the opposite direction by fluid pressure which is normally sufficient to overcome the spring, a block 27 slidable on rod 26 being pivotally connected to cam-shaft 14, a stop 29 on the rod engaging the block to rotate cam-shaft 14 when the fluid pressure drops below a predetermined value. For service braking, an actuator 19 rotates cam-shaft 14 through rod 20. When the pressure in a reservoir drops below a predetermined value, spring 30 rotates the camshaft, the rod 20 having a sliding connection 35 permitting movement of lever 21 beyond the normal service braking movement. The sliding block 27 permits service brake application without interference from cylinder 25; but on emergency braking, nuts 29 on rod 26 engage block 27 to rotate lever 11. A manually operated valve may be used to vent cylinder 25 for applying the brakes of one or more wheels for parking.
