Abstract

A vehicle braking system which includes a pneumatic main brake controlled from a main brake valve and an auxiliary brake controlled by an auxiliary brake valve and applied by springs and released by fluid pressure is so arranged that on failure of the fluid pressure the brake is not immediately applied, its actuation being delayed until one of the valves is operated by the driver. The rear brake cylinders 12 have pistons 16 actuable by pressure from reservoir 4 to apply the brake when the main valve 6 is operated. Further pistons 14 biased in brake applying direction by springs 13 are normally held back by air pressure supplied through lines 7, 11 through valve 8. If this pressure is lost the pistons 14 are held back by hydraulic pistons 18 until actuation of the foot brake valve pedal 27 or hand brake valve lever 26 unseats non-return valve 22 by means of rod 25. In a modification the valve 22 is incorporated in the body of valve 8, alternatively valves in the pump 21 can be connected to the driver's actuation means and may constitute the valve 22.
