816,380. Door stays; releasable fastenings. SCHONITZER, R. 1. Jan. 7, 1957 [Jan. 26, 1956], No. 559/57. Classes 44 and 65(1) A check arm assembly for pivoted structures, e.g. car doors, prevents unintentional swinging of the door and comprises an arm 21 pivoted to the door frame and passing through a unit 10 secured to the door and comprising a cage 32 surrounding a carrier 42 having rollers 43 engaging opposite sides of the arm to grip the same whenever the door is stationary, the cage and carrier having limited relative movement to permit mutual engagement, when the door is moved, to automatically release the rollers from the arm. Fig. 5 shows the position when the door is stationary, the spring 44 then canting the carrier in a clockwise direction and causing the rollers 43 to grip the arm 21. When the door is urged in the opening direction the cage only moves to the left until its wall 29 abuts the rivet 54, canting the carrier anti-clockwise to release the arm clamping action, the door then moving to the open position until checked. by the buffer 65 on the end of the arm. On release of the door urging action the spring 44 expands to cant the carrier and again clamps the arm. On closing the door the cage first moves right relative to the carrier until the cage wall 34 abuts the lug 55 to cant the carrier anti-clockwise, compressing the spring 44 and releasing the arm clamping action. Modifications to the carrier are depicted in Figs. 15-23 (not shown).
