A safety device for limiting the opening movement of a pivoted window 2 comprises a substantially U-shaped stirrup having the ends of its limbs 4 hinged to the window frame 1 and its middle portion 5 slidable relative to the window so as to engage hookshaped stop fittings 6 on the window when the predetermined limit is reached. The stop fittings have portions on which the stirrup slides during the opening and closing of the window and which guide it towards a rest position when the window is fully closed. Alternatively, the stirrup may be spring-biased towards the rest position. The stirrup may be fitted either horizontally or vertically, and may be hinged to the window so as to slidably engage the frame.
