1,272,405. Door biassing device. H. A. FARROW. 22 Oct., 1970 [23 July, 1969], No. 37048/69. Heading E2M. A device for biassing a hinged door D to an open or closed position comprises a bracket 1 attached to the door frame F and pivotally supporting by means of a pin 10, about an axis adjacent to the door axis, an arm 2 which is constrained, by a guide means attached to the door, to swing with the door, a compression or tension spring 5 is arranged so as to be loaded parallel to the arm by the axial movement of the arm relative to the door on opening the door: the pin 10 may be inserted in any one of a number of spaced holes in the bracket 1. As shown, a spring 5 surrounds the arm and extends between a nut 7 (which permits adjustment of the spring's pre-loading) and a guide means in the form of a bracket 3. Alternatively, a tension spring can be connected between the end of the arm 2 and a point on the door D adjacent the hinge or the arm may extend beyond the bracket 3, a tension spring being incorporated between the arm end and the bracket. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), the arm may be U-shaped, a limb of the U extending into a rectangular section tube attached to the door; said limb having a rectangular head piece in the tube and a spring surrounding the part of the limb in the tube.
