Abstract

In the dyeing of natural or artificial protein fibres with vat dyestuff leuco esters, the fibres are first treated with an aqueous solution of bromic acid, whereby the final step of oxidizing with the customary developing solutions is rendered unnecessary. The bromic acid solution may also contain a water-soluble bromate and may be replaced by an acidulated aqueous solution of a water-soluble bromate, e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal bromate, specified acidulating acids being sulphuric, hydrochloric and perchloric, although organic acids may be so-employed. The bromic acid solution may also contain an acid-resisting wetting agent such as an alkali metal lauryl or oleyl sulphate. Dyeing may be effected in an aqueous bath at a raised temperature or by padding. In order to bring out the colour, an acid, e.g. acetic acid, may be added to the dyebath, or alternatively, the dyed material may be subjected to an acid treatment, or to dry heating or to steaming. Enhanced effects may also be obtained by adding to the dyebath, or after-treating with, ferrous ammonium sulphate. Numerous examples are given of the dyeing of wool, and in one case, peanut protein fibres are dyed.
