Abstract
Yarns and textile materials based thereon of non-acetalised polyvinyl alcohol which have undergone sufficient stretching to make their breaking strength at least 5g/denier are dyed by treatment, at a temperature below 70 DEG C., with an aqueous dyebath containing at least 1 mole of sodium sulphate (Na2So4) per kilogram of fibre to be dyed. The fibres to be dyed may be obtained by wet, dry or semi-melt spinning and stretched by 750% or more by known methods. Dyes suitable for the present process are vat and sulphur dyes which are applied in their solubilised form as well as azo dyestuff components which are applied together and then diazotised and coupled in situ. The dyebath may have a temperature of 50-70 DEG C. and the dyeing process which may be about 1 hour long may be followed by oxidative and soaping steps. Examples are given.
