Abstract

Textile fabrics composed of fibres which will dye with a diazotizable dispersed acetate dye, are treated with a diazotizable dye, diazotized, water-washed, and then treated with a buffer solution comprising a weak organic acid and a salt of a p weak organic acid, either immediately prior to, or in conjunction with, coupling the diazotized dye with phloroglucinol, and any part-coupling treatment is effected in the coupling bath. Fabrics of cellulose acetate and triacetate and polyamides may be treated in this way, and diazotizable cellulose acetate disperse dyes are preferred. The buffer solution may comprise acetic acid and sodium acetate. The coupling bath may contain conventional additives, e.g. sodium sulphate and dispersing agents, and part-coupling treatment, effected in the coupling bath, may include soaping off. In an example, an acetate fabric is dyed with Dispersol Diazo Black 2BS (C.I. Disperse Black 2), diazotized, water-washed and then treated for 5 minutes at 20 DEG C. in a bath containing 60 gms. sodium acetate and 60 mls. 30% by weight acetic acid in 60 litres of water. Coupling was effected by adding 10 gms. phloroglucinol and heating to 30 DEG C. After 15-30 mins. the temperature was raised to 50 DEG C. The bath was then neutralized with ammonia, 20 gms. soap added and the temperature held at 50-70 DEG C. for 15 mins., after which the fabric was rinsed and dried. A black dyed fabric of good penetration and fastness was obtained.
